April, 1983 \u2013 28. Januar, 1986) var NASA&#8217;s anden rumf\u00e6rge. Dens jomfrurejse fandt sted den 4. april 1983. Den fl\u00f8j yderligere 8 gange, inden den p\u00e5 sin 10. mission (mission 51-L) den 28. januar 1986, eksploderede 73 sekunder efter start. Hele bes\u00e6tningen p\u00e5 7 astronauter omkom. Den blev erstattet af rumf\u00e6rgen Endeavour, der fl\u00f8j f\u00f8rste gang den 7. maj 1992, godt 6 \u00e5r efter Challengers forlis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bes\u00e6tningen p\u00e5 51-L bestod af: Gregory Jarvis, Christa McAuliffe, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith A. &#8220;Judy&#8221; Resnik, Michael J. Smith og Dick Scobee. Alle omkom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenger-katastrofen skete 73 sekunder efter start d. 28. januar 1986. I sekunderne umiddelbart efter eksplosionen l\u00f8d der f\u00f8lgende lakoniske bem\u00e6rkning fra kontrolcenteret i Houston: &#8220;Obviously a major malfunction&#8221; (&#8220;tydeligvis en st\u00f8rre funktionsfejl&#8221;). Det blev senere fastsl\u00e5et at ulykken skyldtes en defekt O-ring mellem to sektioner i en af faststofraketterne. Defekten opstod fordi O-ringen ikke kunne t\u00e5le frost. En stikflamme fra den defekte samling mellem faststofrakettens sektioner br\u00e6ndte hul i hovedbr\u00e6ndstoftanken og ant\u00e6ndte br\u00e6ndstoffet heri. Det tog omkring 18 m\u00e5neder at finde og rette fejlen, f\u00f8r rumf\u00e6rgeopsendelserne kunne forts\u00e6tte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resterne af Challenger er deponeret i en nedlagt raketsilo p\u00e5 Cape Canaveral i Florida.
